Purchasing & Facilities Manager

How would you describe the Niagara team in 3 words? “ ”

About Stefan

For the past five years, Stefan has worked in the office as the Purchasing and Facilities Manager. In this role, he is grateful for the opportunity to lead renovations and upgrades to breakrooms, bathrooms, offices, production areas, and the overall property, helping create a clean, updated, and positive workplace environment for both employees and visitors. Throughout his time in this role, he has witnessed significant changes at Niagara Specialty Metals, including investments in new machinery, lean manufacturing practices, and automation. In recent years especially, Stefan has seen meaningful improvements focused on modernizing the mills, simplifying workflows, increasing efficiency, and reducing physical wear and tear on employees. Niagara Specialty Metals was Stefan’s first real job, and it continues to be a place he is proud to be part of.

Why Ownership Culture Matters

What Stefan is most proud of is the company culture. At Niagara Specialty Metals, employees are encouraged to share ideas, express their vision, and contribute their thoughts—knowing they will be heard and thoughtfully considered. This is something he always believed to be very important, and throughout his career he's made a conscious effort to support and implement this approach.

Brief History of Stefan's Career

Stefan was first introduced to Niagara Specialty Metals in the spring of 1998 while studying materials engineering at the University at Buffalo. During his junior year, an open position at NSM was mentioned in one of his classes, and at the time he was considering two summer opportunities: an internship with Calspan, a research and technology firm, or a position at Niagara Specialty Metals. Wanting hands-on, real-world experience in a steel manufacturing environment, Stefan chose Niagara—a decision that would go on to shape his entire career.

He began working a few days a week while finishing school and transitioned to full-time work that summer. Over the years, Stefan worked throughout the entire plant, gaining experience across a wide range of operations and roles. He spent the majority of his career in the sheet mill, where he worked for 13 years as a Sheet Mill Supervisor. During that time, he worked alongside many different crews, building strong relationships and a deep respect for the people whose work keeps the mill running day in and day out. Spending long hours in a physically demanding, hot, and sometimes stressful environment created a unique bond, and some of Stefan’s most rewarding experiences at Niagara came from his time on the sheet mill with a dedicated crew.

In the Plant

If he could trade jobs with someone for a day, it would be with our laser cutting machine operator—one of the few positions he never learned firsthand and a process he's always been interested in from start to finish.

Outside of Work

Outside of work, Stefan enjoys golfing, skiing, and music production. In recent years, he has also devoted much of his time to volunteering at the Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center, where he serves as Vice President and Bar Manager.

Advice for New Team Members

For anyone just starting their career at Niagara Specialty Metals, Stefan's advice is simple: arrive on time, work safely, be respectful, and pay attention to detail.
