The stainless knife steel that changed the performance balance.

CPM® MagnaCut is a premium stainless steel engineered by metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas to achieve an exceptional balance of toughness, wear resistance, edge retention, strength, and corrosion resistance.

Its ability to deliver high edge retention and strength without compromising outstanding corrosion resistance is a combination rarely achieved in stainless cutlery steels. This unique performance profile has made CPM® MagnaCut one of the most sought-after materials in the knife industry, particularly for premium, high-performance blades.

Exceptional Toughness High resistance to chipping, breaking, impact, and lateral stress.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance Strong stainless performance in wet, humid, and high-use environments.

Strong Edge Retention Long-lasting cutting performance with practical sharpening behavior.

What Is CPM® MagnaCut?

CPM® MagnaCut was developed by Dr. Larrin Thomas to achieve an exceptional combination of toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, edge stability, strength, and cutting performance.

The grade was originally produced through the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process associated with the CPM® name. Powder metallurgy creates an ultra-fine, uniform microstructure that enhances both performance and consistency.

MagnaCut's alloy design minimizes the formation of large chromium carbides in the heat-treated microstructure. Instead, it relies primarily on fine vanadium- and niobium-rich carbides.

Keeping chromium out of large carbide formations leaves more chromium available in the steel matrix to support corrosion resistance while the fine carbide structure contributes to toughness, edge stability, wear resistance, and predictable cutting behavior.

The result is a high-performance stainless steel capable of delivering excellent corrosion resistance without sacrificing the toughness and edge performance demanded by premium knife makers and users.

Why CPM® MagnaCut Stands Out

Traditional stainless cutlery steels often require compromises between toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and sharpening behavior. MagnaCut was specifically engineered to improve that balance.

High Performance Without Sacrificing Corrosion Resistance MagnaCut delivers high edge retention and strength while maintaining outstanding corrosion resistance, a performance combination that is difficult to achieve in traditional stainless cutlery steels.

Designed for Premium Knife Applications Its combination of toughness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and manageable sharpening has made MagnaCut a highly sought-after steel for high-end kitchen knives, EDC knives, outdoor blades, and other demanding cutting tools.

Why MagnaCut Changed the Performance Balance

MagnaCut was engineered to reduce the traditional compromises between stainless corrosion resistance, toughness, wear resistance, and edge retention.

Fine Carbide Structure MagnaCut uses fine vanadium and niobium carbides rather than relying on large chromium carbides. The resulting fine, stable microstructure supports toughness, edge stability, wear resistance, and consistency.

Stainless Without the Usual Tradeoff With approximately 10.7% chromium in solution, MagnaCut provides excellent protection against rust in wet, humid, and high-use environments without sacrificing the toughness often lost in conventional stainless designs.

Practical Cutting Performance Its balanced carbon, vanadium, and nitrogen content contributes to strong edge retention and wear resistance while maintaining more practical sharpening behavior than many ultra-high-wear steels.
