MagnaMax™ Is Almost Here: The Next Evolution in Knife Steel
MagnaMax™ is almost here.
On Friday, May 1st, Niagara Specialty Metals will officially release MagnaMax™, a new premium knife steel that builds on the proven performance of MagnaCut®. This new grade is designed to push performance further, giving makers and manufacturers improved edge retention while maintaining the balance that made MagnaCut® so widely trusted.
MagnaMax™ is the newest addition to the MagnaCut® family of grades, offering the same corrosion resistance and heat treat approach, now with enhanced edge retention.
In discussion with Dr. Larrin Thomas, MagnaMax™ was developed as a natural progression of the MagnaCut® platform, focusing on increasing edge retention while preserving the balance of properties that made MagnaCut® so widely adopted. Rather than redesigning the steel entirely, the goal was to refine performance within the same framework, giving users a new option depending on their priorities.
For those who rely on steel performance every day, this launch represents more than just a new material. It is an opportunity to work with a grade designed to last longer in real-world use.

MagnaCut® set a new standard by combining corrosion resistance, toughness, and wear resistance in a way that reshaped expectations for the knife industry.
MagnaMax™ builds on that same foundation with one key improvement:
Enhanced edge retention.
Larrin explained that this improvement comes from adjustments to the steel’s composition and structure, allowing for increased wear resistance while maintaining the corrosion performance MagnaCut® is known for. Importantly, MagnaMax™ was designed to stay within a similar balance of properties, avoiding trade-offs that could negatively impact toughness or usability.
This means blades stay sharper longer, reducing the need for frequent maintenance while maintaining consistent performance across applications.
Because MagnaMax™ follows a similar heat treat approach to MagnaCut®, makers can integrate it into their existing processes without significant changes.
For makers, that translates to better end-user satisfaction.

What to Expect on Launch Day
MagnaMax™ will be available starting Friday, May 1st through Niagara Specialty Metals’ online store.

- Initial inventory will be limited
- Orders will be first come, first served
- Demand is expected to be high
Interest in MagnaMax™ has already been building within the knife community, particularly among makers looking to extend edge life without sacrificing corrosion resistance or process familiarity.
